PHASE 1: RESEARCH
The research part of this project has a specific focus on Margate and its history. I focused on various contexts of Margate through posters giving me an in-depth knowledge of the existing. For my drawings of Sunshine cafe and Dreamland Cinema, I wanted to portray a strong understanding of materiality and the ambiance created by the surroundings through the daily sound, movements, and the environment. The style I have chosen to focus on is mainly a diagrammatic format of representation, however, the physical aspect of decay is also shown using renders. Through model making, I also had the chance to explore the surrounding in an artistic manner showing the focus of margates details along with the structure of Sunshine cafes.

POSTERS

PHYSICAL CONTEXT
For my Physical Posters, I have produced rendered drawings of Sunshine Cafe. The precedents I have used are Enric Miralles's 'Olympic Archery Range' and Lawrence and Anna Halprin's 'The RSVP Cycle', both use diagrammatic methods of drawing, allowing me to show as much information as possible. My diagrams are laid out, starting with a simple line drawing to illustrate the elevation or section with the surrounding context, along with a plan to represent their locations. I then displayed a rendered drawing to express the materiality, decay, and remains left by human interaction. This focused on the building's structure and physical form. Whereas my diagrammatic version, graphically presents the surrounding context and its effect on the site. I have focused on different noise projects that travel from all around the area, this could be natural sounds from the sea and wind or man-made sounds from voices, transport and other movements. I have also expanded this idea by looking at the movement of selected people within and around the site. This data is taken from my observations through mapping and recording on different days of my visit.

SITE MODEL
For the site model, we used various methods to represent realistic texture to complement colours and aesthetics of Margate. The materiality for the surrounding buildings was plaster and stone, however, the main building (Dreamland cinema) was shown through the medium of wax, making the specified area standout. The rough texture of the ground was made using textured spray paint, portraying a different surface from the sea that was carved meticulously using wax and acrylic paint through various methods. To show a lifelike yet artistic form we used real sand taken from Margate beach along with patches of green paint to represent the grass on the land. The entire model was placed on cardboard that was layered with plaster to form contour lines, showing the difference between the land and sea.

SECTIONAL MODEL
Sectional Model
For the sectional model we used a more natural approach by making the model using thick MDF boards and bits of cardboard. This was easier to work with as we use the laser cutter machine, which gave precise measurement. However, putting the pieces together was difficult. If any measurements were off, we had to redo those pieces to perfection, making this into a trial and error process. To give a realistic display small miniature bricks were added and painted in different shades of brown with fine texture. The model was also painted using the actual colour of the site (green, grey, and maroon), helping differentiate between the piece and giving a true representation of the section.
